Power Trip Singapore: What Tripped and Why

Power trip Singapore searches nearly all end at the same place. Every other guide on this search tells you how to reset the breaker. Resetting is the easy part, and on its own it fixes nothing, the device tripped because something is wrong. This page tells you when not to reset at all, what the tripping pattern is telling you, and how to find the faulty circuit yourself before anyone arrives.

Before you reset anything

Smoke or flame is SCDF on 995, first

Short of that, these mean do not reset at all: a burning smell, a breaker or faceplate warm to the touch, browning or blistering, an arcing crack or a buzzing sound.

Nothing warm, nothing smelling, reset once

Once. Not repeatedly, and never repeatedly on an RCCB, because that device is protecting a person from earth leakage rather than protecting an appliance.

If it holds, work through the half-split below to find what caused it. If it goes again immediately with nothing plugged in, leave it off, you have learned something useful and there is nothing more to gain by trying again.

Check the neighbours before you call anyone

If the stack, the floor or several units are out, it is supply-side and SP’s investigation is not charged to you. If it is only your unit, the fault is inside your installation.

No lighting at night with a board-level fault is a reasonable emergency call. Sixty seconds of checking first can save the entire call-out fee.

How to reset a power trip safely

Assuming you have cleared the safety check above, the sequence is short and the order matters.

One, switch off and unplug everything on the affected circuit. This stops a failed appliance re-presenting the fault the moment you reset, and it is the step most people skip.

Two, identify which device operated. A tripped switch sits in a different position from its neighbours. Note whether it was an MCB in the row, the RCCB, or the main switch, they mean different things.

Three, reset it once, pushing fully to off before switching to on; a partial reset often will not latch. Four, if it goes again, stop. Repeated resetting achieves nothing and, on an RCCB, is switching off your protection. Our power trip first-steps guide covers the first five minutes in order.

What the tripping pattern tells you

What it does

Trips the instant you reset.

Trips after several minutes, or under load.

Trips only when one appliance runs.

Trips when it rains, or after cleaning.

Trips at no consistent time at all.

What that usually means

A live fault on that circuit: a short, or substantial earth leakage. It will not clear itself.

Load or heat. Either the circuit carries more than it was designed for, or a connection is deteriorating and warming as current flows.

That appliance. The most common cause, and the one that costs you nothing but an evening to establish yourself.

Moisture causing power trip faults. Bathroom, kitchen, or a ceiling point: see the section below, which is where Singapore differs from the generic advice.

Usually mechanical: a loose connection that moves, or a cable under strain. Worth photographing when it happens. Full fault diagnosis covers the rest.

Find the circuit yourself with a half-split

A method worth doing yourself first, because a caller who already knows the circuit and the appliance turns a diagnostic visit into a repair visit.

Unplug everything on the affected circuit and reset. If it holds, the wiring is not the immediate problem. Restore in halves: plug things back one at a time, waiting a minute between each, because earth leakage often needs time to present. Whatever trips it is your answer.

Write down what was running when it first went and whether it trips instantly or after a delay. That one sentence tells an electrician more than a photo of the board does.

What this is not: opening the distribution board, changing a device, or touching wiring. Stay on the outside of the board.

The damp ceiling nobody mentions

Here is a Singapore-specific cause that no page ranking for this search covers, despite a Facebook thread on the same results page describing it directly: a damp patch on the ceiling can trip your power without any electrical fault existing at all.

Water seeping from the unit above, from a roof, or through a bathroom wall reaches a ceiling light point or the wiring serving it. That is enough earth leakage to operate an RCCB. Nothing in your installation has failed; the water is simply providing a path.

The tell is timing. If tripping correlates with heavy rain, or with the hours your upstairs neighbour showers, rather than with anything you switch on, treat seepage as the leading suspect. In that case the real repair is the leak: and if it originates upstairs or in common property, it may not be your bill at all.

An electrician can isolate the affected point so the rest of the property works while the water problem is resolved. Replacing the RCCB, by contrast, would achieve precisely nothing.

How many times can a breaker trip before it is bad?

Google asks this on this exact search and no ranking page answers it, so here is the answer: almost never is the breaker the problem.

Circuit breakers are simple, robust devices that spend their lives doing nothing. A device that keeps tripping is overwhelmingly likely to be working correctly against a fault that has not been fixed. Counting trips is measuring the alarm rather than the fire.

There are two genuine exceptions, and both need testing rather than guessing. A device that will not hold even with the entire circuit disconnected is suspect. So is an RCCB that no longer trips when tested: that one is more serious, because it means the protection is not there when you need it.

Everything else is diagnosis. If tripping recurs after several visits and nobody has produced a test result naming a cause, the question to ask is not whether to replace the breaker but whether the circuit itself needs attention, see rewiring the affected circuits.

What it means for you: A reset that holds is not a repair. If it tripped once with no obvious cause, note what was running at the time and how it behaved on reset, that record is what shortens the visit.

When neighbours are affected too

A fault before the meter is SP’s; SP owns the network up to and including your meter. If the stack, the floor or the block is out, it is theirs, and where the fault is on their side the investigation and repair are not charged to you.

When it is common property

An HDB power trip town council case covers corridor and staircase lighting, lift lobbies, risers and communal electrical services: their responsibility, at no cost to you. The boundary is your front door.

When it is inside your unit

Almost certainly the heater

A storage heater with a degrading element leaks to earth reliably while still producing hot water. Isolate it at its 20A isolator and leave it off for a day; if nothing trips, you have your answer.

Check the neighbours, then decide on tonight

Neighbours fine and your whole unit dark means the main switch or RCCB is involved, a board-level fault. With no lighting at all, that is a reasonable call tonight.

Look up, not at the board

Rain-correlated tripping points at water, not wiring. Check ceilings for damp patches, staining or blistered paint, particularly under a neighbour’s wet area.

The electrical fix is to isolate the affected point; the actual fix is the leak, and it may be somebody else’s responsibility to resolve.

Isolate tonight or call now? The honest economics

Worth stating plainly, because it can save you real money.

In a HardwareZone thread on a midnight breaker quote, a homeowner paid S$120 for a midnight inspection and was quoted S$900 at around 1am to replace burnt circuit-breaker components. Next-morning quotes for the same work: S$50 to inspect, S$550 maximum to replace. Reported spreads run roughly 1.6x to 2.7x.

After-hours pricing is not automatically a scam, unsocial hours and a single-visit callout are real costs, and one contributor to that thread defended the price on exactly those grounds. But the choice is yours to make deliberately. Isolate the affected circuit, keep the rest of the property live, and ask for a daytime visit is a legitimate decision when nothing is warm and nothing smells.

What a power trip visit involves

The board and main switch first: what the property is fed with, what protection is in place, and which device actually operated.

Then testing rather than swapping: insulation resistance and earth leakage on the affected circuit, and appliance elimination if that has not already been done. The aim is a named cause, not a replaced part.

Ask for the written quote before the repair. If a part has to be ordered, a good electrician leaves the affected circuit isolated and everything else working. Ask for the board to be labelled on completion, which is what makes the next fault a twenty-minute diagnosis. Worth knowing: a large share of power trip call-outs end with no part replaced at all, because the cause turns out to be an appliance. A quote that assumes a component replacement before anyone has seen the board is quoting for a symptom.

One thing worth knowing at 2am: several businesses advertising emergency electrical work are branded as handyman services. That branding does not change the law: electrical installation work requires a licensed worker, whoever is holding the screwdriver. Plenty of handyman firms engage one properly; the question is simply which one, and what is their number.

Power trip FAQs

My HDB has a power trip. What should I do?

First, check for anything that removes the choice: smoke or flame means SCDF on 995, and a burning smell, warm breaker or discoloured faceplate means do not reset at all, isolate that circuit and stop using it. If nothing smells or feels warm, switch off and unplug everything on the affected circuit, then reset the tripped device once. If it holds, restore appliances one at a time to find the culprit. If it goes again immediately with nothing connected, leave it off and book a licensed electrician. Also check whether your neighbours have power: if the whole stack is out, it is SP’s side, not yours.

Why is there a power trip?

Because a protective device did its job. An MCB trips on overcurrent, too much load or a short circuit, to stop the cable overheating inside your wall. An RCCB trips on earth leakage, meaning current is going somewhere other than back down the neutral, and that path can be a person. The common causes in Singapore homes are a failing appliance (water heaters, kettles, ageing air-conditioners and fridges lead the list), genuine circuit overload, and moisture ingress. The trip is the symptom; the fault is upstream of it.

How do I check which circuit tripped?

Open the distribution board cover and look at the switch positions: a tripped device sits in a different position from the others, usually midway or fully down. The main switch and the RCCB are typically larger and separate from the row of MCBs. Note which one operated, because an RCCB tripping and an MCB tripping mean different things and lead to different diagnoses. Photograph the board before you touch anything; it is genuinely useful to whoever attends, and it costs you nothing.

How many times can a breaker trip before it is bad?

This is the wrong end of the problem, and it is the question Google asks on this search. Breakers very rarely fail, a device that keeps tripping is almost always operating correctly against a fault that has not been fixed. Repeated tripping means the cause persists, not that the device is worn out. The one genuine exception is a breaker that will not hold even with the entire circuit disconnected, or one that no longer trips under test, and both need a licensed electrician to establish. Replacing a breaker without diagnosis is the most common wasted repair in Singapore homes.

Can a damp ceiling or a leak cause a power trip?

Yes, and it is more common in Singapore than most guides admit. Water seeping through a ceiling: from a neighbour’s unit above, a roof, or a bathroom: can reach a ceiling light point or its wiring and cause enough earth leakage to trip an RCCB, without any electrical fault existing at all. How much does power trip repair cost in Singapore?

Many power trip call-outs end without any part being replaced, because the cause turns out to be an appliance.

Can it wait until morning?

Often, and it is worth knowing that the difference is real money. Singapore forum reporting shows spreads of roughly 1.6x to 2.7x between a midnight quote and a next-morning quote on the same job, in one documented case S$900 quoted at around 1am against up to S$550 the following morning. If one circuit is off, nothing is warm and nothing smells, leaving that breaker off overnight and booking a daytime visit is a defensible choice. If there is heat, a burning smell, or you have no lighting at all, it is not.

Do I call SP, the town council, or an electrician?

Check who else is affected. If the stack, the floor or several units are dark, it is on SP’s side of the meter and their investigation and repair are not charged to you. If only your unit is out, the fault is inside your installation and you need a licensed electrician. If it is corridor lighting, a riser or anything in the block’s common property, that is the town council’s responsibility at no cost to you. Sixty seconds of checking regularly saves an entire call-out fee.

It tripped again a week after the repair. Why?

Usually because the original diagnosis stopped at the symptom. If a breaker was replaced without the fault being found, the fault is still there. If an appliance was suspected but never conclusively eliminated, it may only present intermittently, earth leakage from a degrading heater element is famously inconsistent. Ask for the written diagnosis from the first visit; if it does not name a cause and a test result, that is your answer. A repeat visit should start with insulation and leakage testing rather than with another part.
