Does an electrician need a license in Singapore? Yes, and it is a legal requirement rather than a mark of quality. Electrical installation work in Singapore may only be carried out by a Licensed Electrical Worker licensed by the Energy Market Authority, under the Electricity Act. There are three classes: Licensed Electrician, Licensed Electrical Technician and Licensed Electrical Engineer, and which one your job needs depends on the approved load. There is no size threshold below which the rule stops applying: changing a faceplate, adding a socket and swapping a breaker are all installation work. Yes, and the rules differ in a way worth knowing before you call. Homes are exempt from electrical installation licensing entirely. Non-domestic premises with an approved load exceeding 45kVA must hold an EMA electrical installation licence, appoint a Licensed Electrical Worker of the appropriate class, and be inspected at a set frequency: annually for most installations, six-monthly for multi-tenanted buildings, monthly for construction worksites. A written record of what the fault actually was, test results for any circuit installed or altered, and a labelled distribution board. The labelling matters more than it sounds, it is the difference between the next fault being diagnosed in twenty minutes or two hours. For larger work, also keep an updated layout showing where points and routes ended up, since that is rarely identical to the original drawing. Ask for these at quotation stage rather than at completion, when they are far easier to obtain.
