Licence tiers scale with the load
Domestic and small commercial work fits within a Licensed Electrician’s scope, installations up to 45kVA at up to 1,000V. Beyond that the responsibility steps up: a Licensed Electrical Technician covers up to 150kVA of design and 500kVA of operation, and a Licensed Electrical Engineer carries no upper limit. A food court, a workshop or a larger office often crosses those thresholds, which is why scoping a commercial job starts with the load, not the lighting plan. Getting this wrong is the most common way a commercial installation ends up non-compliant.

What is the difference between an electrician and an electrical contractor?
An electrician (an EMA Licensed Electrical Worker) carries the personal licence to do the work; an electrical contractor is the firm that takes on the project, manages the team and holds an EMA electrical contractor licence. For a home repair you deal with an electrician; for a commercial fit-out or maintenance contract you engage a contractor who deploys licensed workers to the job.
Who is an electrical contractor in Singapore?
It is a business licensed by EMA to undertake electrical installation work, as opposed to an individual worker. The contractor is responsible for the project as a whole, scoping, deploying appropriately licensed workers, and signing off compliance, while the hands-on work is done by Licensed Electrical Workers of the right class for the load.
Do bigger commercial jobs need a special licence?
Yes. A Licensed Electrician can handle installations up to 45kVA at up to 1,000V. Above that, the design and operation must sit with a Licensed Electrical Technician (up to 150kVA design and 500kVA operation) or a Licensed Electrical Engineer (no limit). How do I check a commercial electrician is certified in Singapore?
Ask for the licence and verify it on EMA’s ELISE register at elise.ema.gov.sg, you can search by name or licence number, and the licence card should show a photo, name, IC number and licence number. Commercial clients usually want more than one-off work, scheduled preventive maintenance, compliance and periodic testing, and a known contact for faults.
