Signs your DB box needs attention
Breakers that trip with no pattern. A breaker that feels warm or smells faintly of heat. Discolouration around terminals. A board with no spare ways left when you want to add an aircon or EV circuit. Or simply age, in estates like Toa Payoh and Queenstown, boards installed decades ago predate modern RCCB standards. Any of these earns a proper inspection rather than another reset.
Replace one breaker, or upgrade the board?
If one RCCB has worn out on an otherwise healthy modern board, we replace the device and you are done. If the board is old, full, or mid-renovation anyway, a full upgrade is usually the better spend: one visit, modern protection throughout, and spare ways for whatever you add next. Market pricing runs about S$450 for a new 40A 18-way MCB-and-board installation, with bigger HDB upgrades from around S$1,200, and if your renovation includes rewiring, doing both together saves duplicate labour.

How much does it cost to change a DB box in Singapore?
Market benchmarks: a new MCB and DB box (40A, 18-way) is around S$450 installed, while larger HDB DB upgrades, often done during renovation with rewiring, commonly run S$1,200 and up. A single replacement RCCB or MCB is far less. Every quote is itemised before work starts.
What is the typical lifespan of a DB box?
The mechanical breakers inside a DB age with use and heat. Boards in flats over 20 to 25 years old are usually due a serious look, the same horizon as the wiring itself. A DB that trips with no pattern, feels warm, or shows discolouration has earned an inspection.
Can I upgrade my DB box without rewiring the whole house?
Often, yes, if the existing wiring is sound, the board alone can be modernised. But in older estates it is frequently smarter to do both during one renovation: electricians consistently advise that a modern DB with spare ways installed once beats piecemeal repairs paid for twice.
What is the difference between the main switch, MCB and RCCB?

Why does my RCCB trip with no apparent reason?
Either something really is leaking current, moisture, an ageing appliance, degraded insulation, or the RCCB itself has worn out and become oversensitive. Distinguishing the two takes a leakage test, which is exactly what the diagnostic visit is for.
