HDB Electrical Loading Explained

In short: electrical loading is how much power your flat is designed to draw safely. Older HDB flats were wired for lighter demand than today’s homes, so before adding heavy loads, extra aircon, instant heaters, an EV charger, an electrician checks whether your flat’s loading can carry them, and upgrades the board if not.

What loading actually means

Your flat has a designed electrical capacity, set by the incoming supply, the main switch and the circuits in your DB box. “Loading” is simply how much of that capacity your appliances demand at once. A flat built decades ago was designed around the appliances of its time; a modern home with several aircon units, a big water heater and an induction hob asks a lot more.

How to tell if your flat is upgraded

The evidence lives in the DB box: a higher-rated main switch, more circuits, or a three-phase supply point to an upgrade; an original single-phase board with just a few circuits points the other way. This is not something to guess at, a licensed electrician reads the board and tells you your real capacity, which is the honest starting point for any big addition.
