The short version

Two honest options, and one that is not an option. Can I use a smart switch without a neutral wire? Yes, a no neutral smart switch, which works by trickling current through the lamp and brings minimum-load, flicker and two-way problems with it. Or you can pull a neutral, which is straightforward during a renovation and awkward afterwards. What you must never do is use the earth conductor as a neutral: and Google is asking about that, so it is the first section below.

Can I use ground as neutral for a smart switch? No.

Unambiguously no, and this section is first because Google asks it and not one page on this search answers it.

The earth conductor is a safety path. It exists so that if something goes wrong: a live conductor touching a metal enclosure, an appliance failing internally, fault current has a route that makes a protective device operate before anybody is hurt. It is not a return path for normal load current, and it is not a spare wire.

Why people ask, and why it is dangerous

People ask because there is often an earth conductor present in the switch box and no neutral, which makes it look like the obvious substitute. It is not. Using it that way puts working current onto the conductor your entire safety system assumes is clean, and it defeats the logic an RCCB depends on.

In practice you will probably discover this immediately, because your RCCB will trip, it is watching for precisely this imbalance, as our guide to residual current devices explains. It is unsafe, it is not compliant work, and an electrician Singapore homeowners should walk away from is one who suggests it.

Why Singapore switch boxes have no neutral

Because of the switch loop. Conventional lighting wiring sends the live conductor to the switch, back to the fitting, and takes the neutral directly to the fitting, so the neutral never visits the switch box at all.

That is a perfectly sound arrangement for a mechanical switch, which needs no power of its own. It only became a problem when we started wanting the switch itself to be a powered, connected device.

Including new BTOs

Worth knowing before you assume your flat is modern enough to be fine. One guide ranking on this search states that new HDB BTO flats follow the standard Singapore wiring convention and do not have a neutral at the light switch by default. Another page on the same results list suggests a neutral is usually present in modern homes.

They cannot both be right for your flat, which is the practical point: check the switch box rather than assuming, and do it before buying anything.

If you are viewing a flat to buy, opening one switch plate is a fair request, and it belongs on the list of electrical questions for a resale viewing.

How no-neutral smart switches work

They power themselves by passing a very small current through the connected lamp. That is genuinely clever, and every failure mode in the next section comes from it.

A switch that has a neutral available can simply take power the normal way, which is why neutral-required switches are the more reliable arrangement and why every installer asks the question first.

What goes wrong, in order of likelihood

Minimum load comes first. The trickle only works if the lamp draws at least a certain amount, one guide on this search cites around 3W, and a modern LED can fall below that. The switch then behaves unpredictably or refuses to work at all.

Flicker or a faint glow when the light is off, because that trickle is passing through the lamp. This is the same phenomenon described in the guide to flickering LED lights, arriving deliberately rather than by accident.

Then buzzing, relay chatter, and occasionally a switch that appears to operate on its own. None of that is a fault in your wiring, it is a workaround being asked to do more than it comfortably can.

The two way switch trap

This is the one that catches people after they have already bought the switches. A two-way arrangement, one light controlled from two positions, standard on staircases and common in bedrooms, uses a topology that standard no-neutral smart switches were not designed for, and a guide on this search states plainly that two-way switches break them.

Approaches that work do exist, but they have to be chosen deliberately. If any switch you plan to make smart is two-way, say so before you buy anything: it is the single most useful sentence you can put in an enquiry, and it can save you a wasted call out fee.

Costs: minimum-load constraints, possible flicker or a faint glow, buzzing, and trouble with two-way switches.

Best for: single-switch positions with a reasonable lamp load, where the alternative is disruptive.

Watch for: LED fittings below the minimum load, and any two-way position.

Pull a neutral, or use bulbs and modules

Pull a neutral: the proper fix, and inexpensive if the ceiling or trunking is open anyway. In a finished flat it means a surface route plus making good, because Singapore wiring is exposed.

Smart bulbs: no wiring change at all. Weakness: someone switches the wall switch off and the bulb loses power.

In-line modules at the fitting: a middle route with its own trade-offs, and licensed work to install.

Best approach: choose per room, not per house.

What it means for you: Smart switch plates have gang limits that ordinary plates do not. Count the gangs at each location against the product range before the wiring is set, or you inherit a split you did not design.

Capacitor bypass modules

A legitimate fix, and one this page will explain rather than instruct. A bypass module or capacitor is a small component fitted at the light fitting to give the switch’s trickle current somewhere to go, so that a low-load LED stops flickering or glowing.

Two things follow. It is fitted at the fitting, not the switch, which means opening a ceiling point, electrical installation work restricted to a Licensed Electrical Worker, whoever bought the part. And it is a patch on a workaround: if a ceiling point is being opened anyway, ask what pulling a neutral would cost instead.

Several of the searches around this topic ask how to install one. We are not going to publish that, for the same reason we publish no wiring diagrams, it would be encouraging both an offence and a hazard.

Smart bulbs and in-line modules

The route the retailers under-sell, because it sells fewer switches. A smart bulb requires no wiring change whatsoever, which makes it the obvious answer for a table lamp or a single fitting in a room where the wall switch is rarely touched.

Its weakness is exactly that wall switch: turn it off and the bulb has no power and stops responding to anything. Charming in a study, infuriating in a hallway shared with people who switch lights off out of habit. In-line modules fitted at the fitting sit between the two options.

What pulling a neutral actually involves

A route from the lighting point to the switch position, and in Singapore that means surface trunking, because HDB wiring is exposed rather than concealed. Then termination at both ends, testing, and making good.

Why it is inexpensive during a renovation and awkward after

During a renovation the ceiling may be open, trunking is being run anyway, and adding a neutral to a switch position is a small addition to work already scheduled. In a finished flat the same job is a visible route across a wall, plus the making good.

Which is why the answer to "should I pull a neutral" is usually yes if you are renovating, probably not if you are not, and why this decision belongs in the renovation electrical work plan, the HDB flat rewire or first-fix conversation rather than after the painters have left.

Flat age is part of that judgement, and how many years a flat wiring loom is good for decides whether a neutral pull is a small job or the start of a bigger one.

Which rooms are worth doing properly

Not all of them, and nobody tells you that. Prioritise the positions where automation earns its keep and where the alternatives fail: hallways and staircases, where two-way switching is common and smart bulbs get switched off at the wall; main living areas with multiple fittings on one circuit; and any position you expect to control by voice or schedule daily.

A store room, a bomb shelter and a bathroom rarely justify it. Doing four positions properly beats doing twelve badly.

Smart doorbells: a different wiring problem

Worth a section because it is the other thing people try to make smart, and it fails differently. A wired doorbell runs on a low voltage supply from a transformer, with a chime unit somewhere in the flat. A smart doorbell usually needs continuous power, and often more of it than the existing transformer provides.

So the questions are: is there an existing wired doorbell at all, which db box circuit supplies it, and is there a sensible position for a transformer. Battery-powered smart doorbells sidestep all of it at the cost of charging them, which for many Singapore flats is the pragmatic answer. Anything involving the fixed wiring or a transformer connection is licensed work.

What is licensed work here

Yours: choosing devices, changing lamps, and looking at your switch plate to see what is behind it: carefully, and with the circuit off.

Not yours: switch replacement, fitting a capacitor bypass at a fitting, running a neutral on the lighting circuit, or anything else connected to fixed wiring. That is restricted to a Licensed Electrical Worker under EMA’s rules on engaging licensed electrical workers, and HDB is explicit on the same point for accessories in flats. What to tell your electrician

Four things, and you will get a useful answer instead of a shrug. Which positions you want smart. Whether any of them are two-way. What lamps are on each, wattage matters because of the minimum-load problem. And whether renovation electrical work is happening during a renovation or in a finished flat, because that decides whether pulling neutrals is sensible.

Can I use the earth wire as a neutral for a smart switch?

No. Never. Google asks this on this search and it deserves an unambiguous answer rather than an equivocation. The earth conductor is a safety path, it exists to carry fault current to earth so that a protective device operates and nobody is hurt. It is not a return path for normal load current, and using it as one means deliberately putting current onto the conductor that your safety system depends on being clean. Practically, it can also cause your RCCB to trip, because that device is watching for exactly this imbalance. It is unsafe, it is not compliant work, and any installer who suggests it is telling you something important about themselves.
