The right circuit, in many cases a dedicated circuit, correctly identified and correctly connected. Testing afterwards. Is a 15A switch safe for an aircon?

A Singapore home group thread with thirty-plus comments argues about this, and every commercial page on the search avoids it. So, plainly.

The concern is legitimate. A 15A switched socket outlet is not the same device as a double-pole isolator: it may not disconnect the neutral, and it is not designed for the environment an outdoor connection lives in. Those are real differences, not pedantry.

What does not follow is that every existing 15A arrangement is dangerous. Plenty of older flats have arrangements that predate current practice and are working as intended. The question worth asking is what your appliance requires and what your circuit is rated for.

Why rating is not the whole question

Retail listings on this search show 20A, 32A and even 80A devices, which tells you how unhelpful shopping by amps alone is. Isolation, double pole or not. Weather rating, IP66 or an indoor plastic switch. Position: reachable, or behind the condenser. Those matter as much as the number on the front.

Isolator or circuit breaker?

Should I turn the AC isolator switch on or off?

For servicing, always. That is what it is for, and any technician working on the outdoor unit should expect it isolated before they start.

For everyday use, it depends on your unit, and we are not going to issue a blanket rule that contradicts your manufacturer. Some systems prefer to remain powered between uses; others are entirely happy switched off. The manual for your model is the only source that speaks for your equipment.

The HDB permit rule for 15A points

Flats in blocks completed on or after 1 January 1994, or that have been through the Main Upgrading Programme, are generally in the higher-loading category. An isolator is fitted once and used for a decade, so where it goes matters more than what it costs.

Reachable: by a technician standing safely, not leaning over a ledge. Not behind the condenser, which is the classic mistake. Sheltered where possible, because weather rating buys you resilience rather than immortality. And obvious, so that the next person can find it without being told.

Signs worth acting on: a switch that no longer feels positive, visible cracking or discolouration of the enclosure, water inside it, corrosion at the terminals, or an aircon that behaves oddly when the switch is moved.

Outdoor enclosures in Singapore live a hard life: sun, rain, humidity, and an isolator that has been in place for many years is a reasonable thing to replace during an aircon change rather than after it fails. Batching it with other work
