7kW single-phase vs 22kW three-phase

7kW single-phase (the usual choice)

Runs off a standard single-phase supply, which is what most homes already have.

Adds roughly 40–50 km of range per hour, an overnight charge more than covers daily driving.

Lighter demand on your DB, so it is easier to add without an upgrade.

22kW three-phase (only if your supply allows)

Charges around three times faster, but needs a three-phase supply and real spare capacity.

Many homes do not have three-phase, and most cars cap AC charging below 22kW anyway.

Worth it for high daily mileage or a three-phase landed home, the load check confirms it.

The load check comes first

Before recommending any unit, the electrician checks whether your supply can carry it: incoming supply type, main fuse rating, existing demand and the spare ways in your distribution board. If there is headroom, a dedicated circuit is run straight off the board. If not, the DB is upgraded first, the same electrical-loading logic that governs any big new appliance. Doing this before you buy avoids the classic mistake of a 22kW box that the supply can never feed.

What drives your price

Three things move a home charger quote. Cable-run length, the distance from your DB to the parking bay is often the single biggest factor, especially in landed homes. DB spare capacity, a board with free ways is a simple add; one that is full may need upgrading. Charger model, features like load balancing, an app or a tethered cable change the unit cost. How much to install an EV charger at home in Singapore?

As a market guide, a complete home installation runs about S$2,000 to S$8,000, with roughly S$3,500 typical. That covers the wallbox (about S$1,500 to S$3,000) plus the dedicated circuit, protection, isolator, labour and LTA registration. The biggest single variable is the cable run from your DB to the parking bay.

What is the best home EV charger in Singapore?

The right unit is one that is LTA type-approved, matched to your supply, and from a brand with local support, not simply the highest-powered box. Most homes are well served by a 7kW single-phase wallbox. We are electrician-led rather than tied to one brand, so the load check and your car’s onboard charger drive the recommendation, not a sales quota.

Should I get a 7kW or 22kW charger?

A 7kW single-phase wallbox suits most overnight home charging and is the common choice. A 22kW unit charges far faster but needs a three-phase supply and enough spare capacity in your DB, many homes do not have it, and most cars cap their AC charging below 22kW anyway. The electrician’s load check tells you which is realistic before you buy.

Does my electrical panel have enough capacity for an EV charger?

That is exactly what the load check answers. The electrician looks at your incoming supply, your main fuse rating, existing demand and the spare ways in your DB. If there is headroom, a dedicated circuit is added straight off the board. If not, the DB may need upgrading first, better to know that before the charger arrives. Can I install a home charger in a condo?

Yes, but it involves your MCST because the carpark is common property. You will typically need managing-agent approval, a route for the cable, and sometimes a share of a building-wide capacity plan. Can I install an EV charger myself?

No. In Singapore an EV charger installation must be carried out and endorsed by an EMA Licensed Electrical Worker, on an LTA type-approved unit, to the TR25 standard, and then registered with LTA. DIY installation cannot be registered and is not legal to use. You can, however, verify your electrician’s licence on ELISE before they start.
